APPLICATIONS OF ULTRAMARINE BLUE:
The uses of any material depends on the properties that it possesses. The synthetic ultramarine also posseses certain properties which make it useful in various applications. Below are mentioned a wide variety of applications of the Ultramarine Blue Pigment:-

1. PAINTS:-
Application of Ultramarine Blue in paints relies on its high chemical stability, due to its molecular complexicity, so that it contains high fastness to light, air, water, detergents, alkalis and organic solvents. It is however, "bleached" by acids as the sulphide groups are attacked with the evolution of hydrogen sulphide.

Ultramarine Blue is used in paints to colour Oil Paints, Water and Acrylic Paints, Alkyd and Polyurethene Paints, Water-based Emulsion Paints, Architectural Coatings, Floor Paints, Sealants and Mastics.

Characteristics of ULTRAMARINE BLUE which makes it suitable to be used in Paints:-
1.
Light Fastness
2. Non-Migratory
3. Transparency
4. Heat-Resistance
(but it can be decolourised by an acidic atmosphere)

2. DOMESTIC APPLICATIONS:-
The high stability of the pigment and the fact that it does not contain a transition element also make it non-toxic, so that it can be used for colouring food or food and drink containers. It can als be safely employed to colour any materials which might come into contact with the mouth, for example - toothpaste and children's crayons.

Ultramarine Blue is used in Lipstics, Eye Liner, Nail Varnish, Toilet Soap, Children's Paints, Pencils and Crayons, Toothpaste, Mineral Water Bottles, Detergents, Food Packaging and Containers

Characteristics of ULTRAMARINE BLUE which makes it suitable to be used in Domestic Applications:-
1.
It is Non-toxic.

3. INKS & COATINGS:-
When used in inks synthetic ultramarine blends well with many other colorants so that a complete range of shades can be made up. Recent work has identified red and yellow dyes that will blend with synthetic ultramarine to give true black printing inks which are traditionally difficult to make up.

Ultramarine Blue is used in inks to colour Printing Inks, Colouring and Tinting Paper, Leather Coatings, Textile Printing Inks, Paper Coatings

Characteristics of ULTRAMARINE BLUE which makes it suitable to be used in Inks:-
1.
Tinting and Shading characteristics- It can be mixed with other colorants to give a wide range of colours.

4. PLASTICS & FIBRES:-
The great virtue of synthetic ultramarine as a colorant of plastics or fibres is that, when it is incorporated into these materials, it confers on them "dimensional stability". The Material does not shrink or distort as a result of its being coloured.

Ultramarine Blue is used in fibres & plastics to colour Thermoplastics (eg. polythene), Plastic packaging - film and containers, Plastic pipes, Vinyl and Linoleum Floor Coverings, Synthetic Fibres (eg. Nylon), Natural and Synthetic Rubber

Characteristics of ULTRAMARINE BLUE which makes it suitable to be used in Plastics & Fibres:-
1.
Dimensional stability- It does not cause shrinkage, distortion or warping of polymers in which it is incorporated.
2. Ultramarine does not "leak" poisnous effluent in a landfill site in which the plastics or fibres are dumped.
